Although President Roosevelt denounced the Axis Powers, the U.S. followed a strict policy of isolationism: abstention from alliances and international politics.
During the 1930’s, the U.S. implements neutrality acts, refusing to take sides in European conflicts.

On the same day, the Japanese attacked the Philippines and later several other islands in the Pacific.
By spring 1942, almost all of the Pacific had fallen to the Japanese.
