1 Properties of the Atmosphere
11.2 Objectives: Define temperature, air pressure, and humidity Explain how each property is measured Define latent heat

2 Fill in the Notes page & FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS!
Definitions, pictures, and explanations are on the lab desks Use the textbook when told Use the tools to record classroom atmospheric conditions Interactive Notes

3 a. Measure of thermal energy due to the movement of particles
b. Thermometer c. i. Boiling: 100 deg C = 212 deg F Freezing: 0 deg C = 32 deg F (no easy conversion) c. ii. Boiling: 100 deg C = 373 K = 273 (difference of 273) Temperature

4 Air Pressure a. Force exerted by air over a particular area
b. Barometer c. i. Warm air > cool air c. ii. High-density air > low-density air c. iii. Warm air < cool air d. Air moves from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure, creating wind Air Pressure

5 Humidity a. Amount of water vapor in the atmosphere b. i. Hygrometer
b. ii. 1. Saturation: max amount of water vapor the air can hold (100%) b. ii. 2. Relative humidity: percentage to show the amount of water vapor compared to the amount needed for saturation c. Latent heat: thermal energy contained in water vapor d. Freezing, deposition, condensation (arrows pointing left) Humidity
