Behavior of Waves
2
What is reflection? Reflection is when a wave bounces off a surface that it cannot pass through. Examples of reflections: Sound bouncing off a wall in an echo Water waves bouncing off the side of the bathtub.
3
Characteristics of Reflections
Waves that are reflected have the same speed and frequency. The wave can be flipped upside down. The troughs become crests and crests become troughs.
4
What is Refraction? Refraction is the bending of a wave as it enters a new medium at an angle. One side of the wave is moving faster than the other side so the wave bends toward the slower medium
5
What is diffraction? Diffraction is the bending of a wave as it moves around an obstacle or passes through a narrow opening.
6
What is interference? Interference is what occurs when two or more waves overlap and combine together. Two types: Constructive interference Destructive interference
7
Constructive Interference
When two or more waves combine to produce a wave with a larger displacement.
8
Destructive Interference
When two or more waves combine to form a wave with smaller displacements.
