1 Documentation Analysis
Day 3

2 Do Now Describe the different characteristics of the following that investigators might analyze: Paper- Type- Pencil Marks-

3 Flash Card Check  7) Alteration:  A change in the physical appearance or meaning of something, often only slightly. 8) Authenticate:  To prove that something is real, true, or what it is said to be. 9) Indentations:  The impressions that are left behind on a writing surface, or the surface underneath, by the writing instrument.

4 Recognition, Collection, and Preservation of Document Evidence
Careful handling and protection of a document is important. Any writing must be preserved for analysis. Other evidence may be present on the document as well,  such as fingerprints or trace evidence. Investigators must examine the document thoroughly in order to determine what analyses should be done and in what order. Some tests may damage the document and should be performed last.

5 Recognition, Collection, and Preservation of Document Evidence
Document evidence should be immediately encased in a plastic sheet protector. Documents should be handled with gloves. Information contained in evidence such as threatening letters and extortion notes may need to be kept classified for the protection of the case.

6 Recognition, Collection, and Preservation of Document Evidence
Types of documents commonly forged: Checks, money orders and promissory notes Deeds and titles to property Court seals and records Securities, stocks, and bonds Wills, contracts, public records Corporate documents Currency (Money) Documents used for identity theft

7 Analysis of Ink Here are your vocab words for the day:
10) Ink Composition: The mixtures of solvents and dyes or pigments that make up the ink. 11) Dye: A deeply colored material that dissolves in a solution or an object to give it a desired color. 12) Pigment: A very finely divided, highly colored material that does not dissolve, but rather is suspended in a solution or dispersed through an object to give it a desired color.

8 Analysis of Ink Activity
Ink can be separated into its component parts by chromatography. You will use chromatography to analyze 3 pens. Then you will analyze an unknown mark and determine which pen made the mark. You will then use a spreadsheet to evaluate the data from your analyses.
