1 Warm up day 8/30/15 In your composition book
What is the difference between distance and displacement? Try to answer it then check your answer on the next slide

2 Answer to warm up Displacement includes direction. Distance does not.

3 Write down these notes in your notebook
Velocity : The speed an object is traveling that also includes direction. If object is moving to the right the velocity is positive. If the object is moving to the left the velocity is negative.

4 More notes in notebook Formula for calculating velocity:
Velocity=displacement time The symbol for velocity is v The symbol for displacement is x So: V=x t

5 More Notes about velocity
Instantaneous velocity: Velocity at an exact moment in time. Example: your speedometer in car tells you instantaneous velocity. Average velocity: average velocity over a period of time. example: if you drive 10m/s for 1second and 20m/s for 1 seconds your average velocity is 15m/s

6 More notes in notebook Solving Velocity Problems:
To solve velocity problems, You need to divide the displacement by the time. Velocity=Displacement time Example Problem: If you start at a position 8meters from home and end at a position 12 meters from home and this trip took 2 seconds, what is your velocity? Step 1. Figure out the displacement. To do this, take your final position and subtract the initial position. displacement= Final position – Initial position displacement= 12meters-8meters displacement=4meters Step 2. Divide the displacement by the time. Velocity=4meters So the answer is 2m/s 2seconds

7 Complete the following problems in your compositions book.
If an object starts 4meters from home and moves to 14 meters from home in 20 seconds, what it the velocity of the object? If an object starts at home and moves 20 meters from home in 5 seconds, what is the velocity? If an object starts 20 meters from home and moves back to 5 meters from home, what is the velocity? ( be careful of positive and negative signs on this one)
