Definitions A ball will roll down an incline starts at some height above the floor. It has potential energy = m g Δh. The potential energy will change into: linear kinetic energy = ½ mv2 angular kinetic energy = ½ I ω2
3
Lets examine rolling spheres
I = 2/5 m r2 angular kinetic energy = ½ I ω2 Thus the angular kinetic energy of a sphere is ½ (2/5 m r2) ω2 = 1/5 m r2 ω2
4
Energy Conservation The potential energy at the top changes into linear and kinetic energy. m g Δh = ½ m v /5 m r2 ω2 g Δh = ½ v /5 r2 ω2 Conclusion The mass is not a factor.
5
The radius of the sphere
g Δh = ½ v /5 r2 ω2 Definition ω = v/r Substituting g Δh = ½ v /5 r2 (v/r)2 Combining g Δh = ½ v /5 v2 Conclusion The radius of the sphere is not a factor.
