Natural Numbers: Numbers 1 through infinity ∞. Examples: 1,2,3,….
Number Systems Natural Numbers: Numbers 1 through infinity ∞. Examples: 1,2,3,….
3
Whole Numbers: the number zero plus the natural numbers.
Examples 0 𝑝𝑙𝑢𝑠, 1,2,3,4…
4
Integers Integers: Positive or negative numbers that can be written without a fractional component. Examples: …−3,−2,−1,0,1,2,3…
5
Number Line We can diagram numbers using a “number line” Positive numbers point to the right ( “greater than” zero). Negative numbers point to the left ( “less than” zero).
6
Graphing Later on, we will add a vertical “number line” and graph in two dimensions.
7
Rational Numbers Rational Numbers: numbers that can be expresses as ratios. Examples: − 1 8 , 1 4 , 8 5 , 𝑒𝑡𝑐
8
Irrational Numbers Numbers that can not be expressed as a ratio Examples: , 𝜋, 17 , 𝑒𝑡𝑐
9
Real numbers The real number system includes all rational and irrational numbers.
10
Imaginary numbers Square root of a negative number such that 𝑖 2 =−1
