2 How to form the near future tense

3 Translation: near future
1. Tomorrow I am going to go to town and I am going to buy a present. Demain je vais aller en ville et je vais acheter un cadeau. 2. Next weekend he is going to do his homework and she is going to go out with some friends. Le weekend prochain il va faire ses devoirs et elle va sortir avec des amis. 3. Next week we are going to eat at a restaurant and they are going to watch a film. La semaine prochaine nous allons manger à un restaurant et ils vont regarder un film. Students can translate these three sentences on their own or working with a partner, in their books, on mini-whiteboards or orally. The correct translation for each sentence will appear when you click. As an extension, students could write some of their own sentences. © 16306

4 How to form the simple future tense
Step 1 Step 2 The future stem Future endings For regular –er and –ir verbs use the infinitive: jouer finir For regular –re verbs use the infinitive but drop the last ‘e’: vendr Je jouerai Tu visiteras Il/Elle/On finira Nous regarderons Vous vendrez Ils/Elles habiteront Elicit the formation of this tense if possible, encouraging students to suggest more regular er/ir/re infinitives and to predict the endings. See if students can recognise the similarity of the future endings to the present tense of avoir. Students can then make their own notes or you can provide a printout of the slide if preferred. 5 Irregular stems for the simple future tense
aller – to go j’irai – I will go avoir – to have j’aurai – I will have courir – to run je courrai – I will run devoir – to have to je devrai – I will have to envoyer – to send j’enverrai – I will send être – to be je serai – I will be faire – to make/do je ferai – I will make/do mourir – to die je mourrai – I will die pouvoir – to be able to je pourrai – I will be able to recevoir – to receive je recevrai – I will receive savoir – to know (how to) je saurai – I will know venir – to come je viendrai – I will come voir – to see je verrai – I will see vouloir – to want to je voudrai – I will want to It may be useful at this point to demonstrate how to use verb tables in a dictionary (or textbook) to check irregular stems. © 16306

6 Translation: simple future
1. Next year we’ll visit the museum and I’ll see the paintings. L’année prochaine on visitera le musée et je verrai les peintures. 2. Tomorrow evening he will run to the sports centre and we will go there on foot. Demain soir il courra au centre sportif et nous irons là-bas à pied. 3. Next month they will play tennis and we will go to the cinema. Le mois prochain ils joueront au tennis et nous irons au cinéma. Students can translate these three sentences on their own or working with a partner, in their books, on mini-whiteboards or orally.
