1 True/False: Cell Size Limitations
Cells come in a variety of shapes and sizes Osmosis limits cell size The smaller the cell, the faster diffusion occurs DNA limits cell size because it limits protein production Cells can have more than one nucleus As cell size increase, the surface area increases faster than the volume If a cell is too large, the cell cannot diffuse materials in and out of the cell quick enough to remain healthy.

2 Cell Reproduction & Cell Cycle
Chapter 8.2

3 Cell Reproduction Cell division (MITOSIS)
process that forms new cells from one cell results in two cells that are identical to the original, parent cell.

4 Importance of Cell Reproduction
Growth (increase in size) Repair (replace dead or damaged cells)

5 Chromosome Chromosomes- tightly coiled DNA (chromatin)
Carries the genetic material that is copied and passed from one generation of cells to the next.

6 Parts of the Doubled Chromosome
1= Sister Chromatids Exact copies of DNA 2= Centromere Structure that holds sister chromatids together

7 Cell Cycle Sequence of growth and division of a cell
Growth period= Interphase Nuclear Division= mitosis

8 Interphase Majority of cell’s life spent at this stage
Cell grows in size Carries on metabolism Chromosomes duplicate

9 Interphase 3 parts: G1: Rapid growth and metabolic activity
S: Cell copies its chromosomes (DNA synthesis & replication) G2: Growth period- mitochondria & other organelles are made and cell parts needed for cell division are assembled
