Preventing Obesity Kenedy Rouse, Sergio Mendoza, Bre Banks, Erin Moore ARC December 18, 2013

2 Whats The Problem? The United States is ranked as the most obese country in the world, but has there been effort to make a change to this problem? Is lack of nutrition becoming a factor in the obesity rate rising?

3 How do we Know it’s a Problem?
Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years.

4 Research Questions Why are children not being educated enough about their health choices. Are school lunches a reason for the growing in adolescent obesity? Why aren’t nutritional facts listed on the lunches provided at school so children know how many calories, and how much fat they are consuming? What can health teachers do to make sure teenagers know about the nutrition they need? Are there more healthier choices for lunches at school? How much nutritional value has to be in a meal for it to be acceptable to sell at schools?

5 Important Information
70% of obese youth had at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Approx. One in every three children are overweight or obese. Obesity in adolescence may lead to: Heart Disease, Type 2 Diabetes, Asthma, Sleep Apnea, and Social Discrimination.

6 Interviews We interviewed two health education teachers to get their point of view on multiple topics Nutrition Student knowledge School lunch nutrition Mrs. Willing and Mr. Knapp were the two teachers chosen due to the fact that they teach Health Education classes The responses all support our views that students have a lack of knowledge on nutrition and not enough healthy options The interviews offered a different point of view from a person that teaches about health and nutrition

7 Survey Results/Graphs
48% of students would consider the choices for school lunches to be good. 44.3% of students purchase a lunch everyday. 94.2% of people think that there could be more healthier choices offered for lunch. 48.9% of people do not bring their lunch 48.2% of teens at Grand Blanc High School believe that the food in the cafeteria does not provide enough nutrition for you to function throughout the day. 25% of students suggest that the salad line is the best line to choose from. 65.5% of teens at Grand Blanc High School think that there are healthy options offered.

8 Conclusion New school health education policy and increase the years of physical education. Nutritional Facts provided for every lunch item Increasing students knowledge on healthy lifestyles and how to achieve that lifestyle. Substitute some lunch options with more healthier and more appealing food.

9 Recommendations Expand the curriculum of the health classes to talk more about nutrition. Provide nutrition facts on main courses in the lunchroom for people who want to be aware of what they are eating. Offer a workout club to those who want to get in shape after school.
