1 Earth in the Universe Space Exploration

2 Essential Standards 6.E.1 Understand the earth/moon/sun system, and the properties, structures and predictable motions of celestial bodies in the Universe.

3 Clarifying Objectives
6.E.1.3 Summarize space exploration and the understandings gained from them.

4 Essential Questions What early theories & discoveries helped us gain knowledge about planets? How do we use data gained by space exploration? What instruments are used to collect data from space? What discoveries made by space instruments help us better understand the universe? What are the risks and benefits of the International Space Station? How have the technologies developed in space enhanced our daily lives?

5 Early Space Theories (Ideas)
There were 3 early Astronomers that all had different ideas about the universe & the Earth Ptolemy- thought that sun revolved around the earth (Geocentric) Copernicus- discovered Earth Revolved around the sun (Heliocentric) Galileo- supported Copernicus Heliocentric Theory

6 Essential Questions Get with a partner and answer the question…
What early theories & discoveries helped us gain knowledge about planets?

7 Space Data Instruments collect data about space
Our understanding of the Electromagnetic Spectrum allows us to make discoveries that we cannot see The DATA we collect is SO IMPORTANT to understanding the Earth & the UNIVERSE that we live in

8 Essential Questions Get with a partner and answer the question…
How do we use data gained by space exploration?

9 NASA NASA is a government organization in charge of Space Exploration in the United States NASA stands for National Aeronautical Space Administration NASA is the organization that makes most of the important space discoveries that we know of today

10 Space Instruments Throughout history there have been many important discoveries about the universe we live in They could not have been discovered without… Hubble Telescope Chandra X-Ray Observatory Spitzer Telescope Fermi-Gamma Telescope

11 Hubble Telescope Hubble Telescope is the largest & most accurate telescope in Space 5 miles per second & takes pictures that are sent back to Earth

12 Chandra X-Ray Observatory
Chandra X-Ray Observatory is a place where astronomers can study X-Rays It is an observatory that travels through space to detect X-Rays on the Electromagnetic Spectrum These waves tell us that there is more in the universe than Optical (seeing) telescopes can see

13 Spitzer Telescope Spitzer is an Infrared Telescope detecting Infrared Waves It detects any material that is composed of Infrared Waves Spitzer Telescope has provided much data that helps Astronomers understand more about the Earth & the Milky Way Galaxy

14 Fermi-Gamma Telescope
Fermi-Gamma Telescope detects Gamma Rays in Outer Space It measures the Energy in the Gamma Rays It also tells which direction the Gamma Rays are going

15 Essential Questions Get with a partner and answer the question…
What instruments are used to collect data from space?

16 Many Objects Discovered
Instruments have discovered many things in Space that are not planets These include… Comets Asteroids Stars Vacuums Black holes Moons Other Universes

17 Essential Questions Get with a partner and answer the question…
What discoveries made by space instruments help us better understand the universe?

18 International Space Stations Good or Bad??
Disadvantages (BAD) Very Expensive Space Station Needs REPAIR Astronauts are risking their LIVES all the time Advantages (Good) Gateway to the Universe Improves International Relations Research & Discovery Capabilities Better than anything we can do from Earth

19 Essential Questions Get with a partner and answer the question…
What are the risks and benefits of the International Space Station?

20 Space Impacts our Life We use many things in our daily lives that without space discoveries we would not have… Microwaves Calculators Fire Retardant Clothing Bar Coding

21 Essential Questions Get with a partner and answer the question…
How have the technologies developed in space enhanced our daily lives?

22 Understandings from Space Exploration
We have learned so much from Space Exploration The most important thing to keep in mind is discoveries in space has helped us learn more about the Earth & Universe we live in

23 EOG Questions Which represents information that is gained as a result of space exploration? A) weather and climate patterns that occur on Earth B) existence of the sun and the moon in the solar system C) how to use coal and natural gas as energy resources D) location of plates found upon Earth’s surface

24 Important Points Space Exploration began thousands of years ago with Ptolemy, Galileo, & Copernicus Space Exploration has provided us with useful DATA We have used the data in how we build, inventions we have made We have many different INSTRUMENTS we use to make Space Discoveries We use space discoveries in our daily lives everyday Microwaves Calculators Fire Retardant Bar Codes Space Exploration helps us understand Earth & the Universe where we live
