1 Categories of Information:
K-W-L K (KNOW) W (WANT TO KNOW) L (LEARNED) Categories of Information: Have students fill in what they know in the first column and what they want to know in the second column, before reading. During and after reading, students should put a check mark next to any item in the K column that is actually true, and cross out anything that is actually false, based on the reading. They should also add new learnings in the L column. You could also add a fourth column for “new learning,” reserving the L column for only information that answered the questions in the W column. To add to this activity, guide students in characterizing their knowledge. Come up with some categories as a class, then have students label their learning with an initial that represents that category.
