3. Annexation of Texas
Texas won their independence from Mexico and voted to be annexed, “to join” the United States
Mexico broke off relations with the U.S. and uncertainty of the southern border of Texas caused conflict between the U.S. and Mexico
Mexican War was fought over the lost of Texas and Southern boundary of Texas
New Southern boundary would be the Rio Grande River

5. Gadsden Purchase
Mexican government sold 30,000square miles of land to the United States, which makes up New Mexico and Arizona
This land became useful to build the Southern transcontinental railroad
Provided closer land toward the Pacific Ocean

7. Gold Rush
Gold was found in California which started a flood of people from the East to move out West
California’s population in 1848 was 14,000 and then after the Gold Rush the population in 1852 was 200,000 people
This migration of people helped set the western part of the United States
Cities along the Pacific Ocean began to emerge and new economic opportunities arose
