Today we are going to listen to a piece by Jonathan Edwards called “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God”
Based on that title and the images and words you just saw – predict what you think this piece might be about

What is a simile? What is a metaphor? What is personification?
As you listen/read this piece look at how Edwards uses these devices to help the average person understand complex ideas about religion by comparing them to every day objects that everyone was familiar with!

What was Edwards claim? How do you think this speech made people feel? What words or images does Edwards use to create this feeling? Explain. How effective do you think Edwards speech was? Make a claim and back it up with examples from the text – be sure to cite!
