Define "the illusion of speed" vs.
"The process of planning and exercising conscious control over the amount of time spent on specific activities" - wIKiPEDIA IV. Let’s Chat: Whole Group {approx. 10 min} "it isn't the rate at which material is presented, but rather the rate at which the lesson makes that material appear or unfold" "Teach Like a Champion" by Doug Lemov Retrieved 2/21/13 from
9
How can we create the “illusion of speed?”
1. Change of pace 2. Brighten Lines 3. Look Forward 4. Work the Clock Change the Pace: Instead of changing topics every few minutes (to give the illusion of a quick pace), try changing the format in which you are giving instruction. Every ten to fifteen minutes, change your current activity to a new one. For example 1. start with daily oral language 2. switch to a mini-lesson on helping verbs 3. teach a song that relates to helping verbs 4. model how to find helping verbs in a paragraph form 5. allow independent practice 6. wrap up with a review of the helping verb song 7. finish with an exit ticket.

What do I want students to learn and take away?
What learning activities will reinforce my goals and objectives? How will I check for understanding and have them apply what they learned? - Questions to ask yourself while planning How can I make the information relevant to them?
14
Pass out lesson planning guide - Speak to portions of the sheet
“Timeline”

Prior Knowledge Build background by recording prior knowledge so students determine what they do not know about the upcoming lesson. This will help determine where you need to focus your time during the lesson.
16
Data Use data to drive the focus of your lesson.
What are they struggling with the most? This is where you need to spend the most time.
17
Relevance Ask “What’s the big idea?” or “So what?” and ensure students know why they should care about the topic. Make it relevant. Stick to the plan!
