1 Objective: Students will be able to understand
January 25, Math 201 Objective: Students will be able to understand the concept of rate Aim: What is the difference between a rate and a ratio? Standards: 6.N.6, 6.N.8 Prior Knowledge: 1) In a classroom, there are 12 students and 5 computers. Write the ratio of students to computers. 2) In the gym closet, there are 10 softballs, 4 basketballs, and 3 soccer balls. Write the ratio of soccer balls to the total number of balls.

2 A rate is a ratio of two measurements having different units. Example:
Tyrone travelled 300 miles in 5 days The units miles and days are different

3 When a rate is simplified so that it has a denominator of 1 unit, it is called a unit rate
Example: The speed limit on the highway is 55 miles per hour The denominator is 1 unit

4 Unit cost is the cost of a single item or unit of measurement
Example: The cost of a 12-ounce jar of jam is $2.49 The unit cost is 21 cents per ounce

5 Example: The telephone rang 50 times in 5 minutes. Write the rate as a fraction and find the unit rate. Step 1 Write the rate as a fraction: Step 2 Find an equivalent rate with a denominator of 1. (If we want 1 in the denominator, what number can we divide the denominator and numerator by?) Step 3 Name the unit rate

6 Example: Write the rate 90 miles in 2 hours as a fraction. Find the unit rate. Write the rate as a fraction The numerator and denominator have a common factor of _______________ Name the unit rate

7 Independent Practice:
Write the rate for selling 300 tickets in 6 days as a fraction. Find the unit rate. Write the rate as a fraction. Find an equivalent rate with a denominator of 1. Divide the numerator and denominator by ____. The unit rate is _______ tickets per day.

8 Remember, to find a unit cost, divide by the denominator
Mr. Tucker bought a box of oranges for $ The box contains 15 oranges. Find the unit cost to the nearest cent. Write the rate as a fraction Divide the numerator by the denominator. The unit cost rounded to the nearest cent is ______________ Each orange costs about_____________

9 Unit rate homework: Write each rate as a fraction. Find each unit rate. 30 feet every 5 seconds 28 pancakes every 7 minutes 60 miles every 3 hours $24.30 for 6 pounds
