Learning Gain: All learners will explore the historical impact of President Abraham Lincoln on American society. Today we will: Discuss the actions and politics of Abraham Lincoln Analyse a film as a historical source. Explain how Lincoln’s time as President changed the USA.

Lincoln Learning Gain: All learners will explore the historical impact of President Abraham Lincoln on American society. Write down anything in GREEN. Abraham Lincoln was the 16th US President, beginning his term in 1861. He was born in the southern state of Kentucky and created a new political party called the Republicans. He was president during the Civil War and managed to keep the country together. He is remembered for abolishing slavery, strengthening the American government, and modernizing the economy.

3 Lincoln Learning Gain: All learners will explore the historical impact of President Abraham Lincoln on American society. Today we will watch a film about Abraham Lincoln’s time as President. Whilst watching, take notes that will help you answer the following assessment question: You will be responding to this in essay form. How did Abraham Lincoln contribute to change in American society during his time as President and afterwards?

Firstly, your essay must: Identify Abraham Lincoln and explain his historical significance Explain the views and opinions that influenced his political decisions Discuss the consequences of his actions and decisions Explain how he contributed to change in US Civil Rights Key Words Abolitionist Amendment Legislative Emancipation Proclamation Rebel Union Confederate Racism Success Criteria Clearly identify Lincoln (When was he President? Which party?) You may choose to discuss… Conditions in America before/during/after Lincoln’s term Significance of Lincoln coming to power US Civil War Lincoln’s opinion of slavery Support for / Opposition to Lincoln’s ideas and decisions Regardless of what you choose to write about in your essay, you must give specific details and explain how it led to change in terms of US Civil Rights. 6 How did Abraham Lincoln contribute to change in American society during his time as President and afterwards? STEP 1 When writing an essay, you need an argument which you will prove throughout your writing. STEP 2 Once you have your argument, you should develop an introduction around it. STEP 3 Your body paragraphs must each be developed around one main idea, and each of these should prove your argument. (Support with evidence) STEP 4 Your conclusion must explain how you have proved your argument. You can do this by summarising your main points, and linking them to your introduction.

7 Using a film as a historical source
You may choose to discuss… Significance of Lincoln’s popularity Lincoln came to power at a tense time in American History. With the Union threatened by the Confederacy in the US Civil War, a strong President was needed to lead. Abraham Lincoln was such a President; he was well-liked by citizens and politicians of America alike. This was shown in the film Lincoln when he visited Union soldiers on the battlefield in the opening scenes of the film. African American soldiers and white soldiers, who were fighting together for the Union, likewise showed their respect for the President by reciting parts of Lincoln’s famed Gettysburg Address. This shows that his ideas and messages connected with Americans at that time, and this respect would have helped him stay in power.
