Work & Power Lecture
2
Work Work = Force x distance (W=Fd)
Anytime you apply a force to an object and move it you are doing work. Measured in Joules (J) J = N * m
3
Is this person doing work?
Since the barbell is not moving this person is not doing work.
4
Practice Problems: Compare the amount of work done in these two situations… Situation 1: You lift two loads up one story of stairs Situation 2: You lift one load up one story of stairs. You do twice as much work in situation 1 because, you have twice the mass and therefore twice the force.
5
Two types of work: Work done against a force
Example: raising an object up against gravity work done to change the speed of an object Example: speeding up a car
6
Power Rate at which work is done Power= work done time interval
Unit: Watt (W)= J/s The higher the power, the more rapidly the work is done
