1 6.4 Fire Safety Key Concepts:
What are the three things necessary to maintain a fire? Why should you know about the causes of fire and how to prevent a fire? Key terms: Combustion, fuel

2 Understanding fire Fire is the result of combustion – a rapid reaction between oxygen and a substance called a fuel. Fuel is a material that releases energy when it burns Oil, gasoline, wood, paper, etc It always produces Carbon Dioxide and water

3 The Fire Triangle The following are necessary to start and maintain a fire: fuel, oxygen, and heat About 20% of air is oxygen Heat is part of the triangle because you can have fuel and oxygen, but you need something to ignite them to get a fire Once started, a fire will keep going as long as it has all 3 components.

4 Controlling fire Keep one of the three components away. Heh.
Or add water, which covers the fuel and prevents oxygen from touching it

5 Home fire safety With a small fire, you can put baking soda on it or water (use a hose or whatever provides the necessary amount of water). Yay for common sense. Use a fire extinguisher. Yay again. Baking soda DECOMPOSES when heated and releases carbon dioxide gas.
