Move from farm to cities meant change from wealth in land to wealth in wages City life = variety Industry and innovation make production more efficient and more profitable The Free Market: more competition means better quality and lower prices

3 Consumerism Higher wages and extra money drives spending
NEED gives way to WANT! Advertising takes off

4 Higher Standard of Living
Consumer goods as status symbol Improved sanitation and medicine meant better health Indoor plumbing, electricity, mass transit make life easier More women in workforce, men work longer to maintain image of wealth and success

5 Mass Culture People around the country can get the same things: news, clothing, food, entertainment, etc. Growth of an “American culture” Newspaper and books gain readership: WHY?

6 Education Grade schools everywhere
Start of Kindergarten and high school Change in educational philosophy Liberal arts and technical training

7 Entertainment Amusement Parks: a response to free time, higher wages, and new technology Coney Island, Jersey Shore, almost every major metropolitan area

8 Theaters Vaudeville acts: variety show with comedy
Live theater for the masses Movies: cheap theaters (nickelodeons)

9 Sports Baseball Boxing Racing: cars, humans, horses…it didn’t matter
Football: Caught on in colleges…then banned
