Introduce the slide show by explaining to students that the images they’re about to see are from an internet site called “The Valley of the Shadow.” They are images from the battlefields of the Civil War.

Have the students look at the picture closely. What kinds of things do they notice. Point out the drummer boy in the lower right-hand corner. Why is he there?

Give students a minute to look closely at the picture. Students will be drawn to the man in the black shooting the man in the white. How did the man in the black get so close to the man the white? Could this happen in a US war today?

After students examine the image, talk about the horse in the center. What flag is the horseman carrying? Where would you want to be…in the front or the back? The man in the center is throwing something. What do you think he is throwing?

8. After students look at the picture, talk about the explosions on the background. Also, point out the line of soldiers in the background. Why, in the heat of battle, do you think they’re in a line?
