1 The Civil War Introduce the slide show by explaining to students that the images they’re about to see are from an internet site called “The Valley of the Shadow.” They are images from the battlefields of the Civil War.

3 Have the students look at the picture closely
Have the students look at the picture closely. What kinds of things do they notice. Point out the drummer boy in the lower right-hand corner. Why is he there? Shennandoah, October 22, 1864

4 Again, ask the students to really examine the picture

8 After students look at the picture, talk about the explosions on the background. Also, point out the line of soldiers in the background. Why, in the heat of battle, do you think they’re in a line? Chancellorsville, May 23, 1865

9 Images tell us a lot about Civil War battlefields.
For example, images tells us about… The style of combat. Let the students read this. Ask the students to tell you what other kinds of things pictures tell us. The kind of weapons. The role of horses.
