1 Developing Dialogue Why and When it’s used

2 Reasons we talk…… To get/ give information To share feelings
To make plans To pass time To give instructions To share opinions Characters talk for the same reasons, but authors do not record EVERY conversation as in a typical day; that would be BORING!

3 Colorful Conversation
Dialogue has TWO main functions: 1. To tell us more about characters 2. To move the plot forward

Underline in blue any words or phrases that tell about Samantha Underline in green any words/ phrases for Mrs. Mann. Underline in red the part of the dialogue that suggests what will happen next.

6 He Said, She Said with Dionte
Things to ponder…… ?How do the two characters know each other? ?What has happened? ?What are they saying to each other?

7 How do we PUNCTUATE Dialogue?
All dialogue needs: Quotation marks around words said A speech tag of who said it A new paragraph when the speaker changes A comma to seperate dialogue from speech tags

8 Punctuating Dialogue with Dionte
Circle quotation marks in blue Circle commas in red Circle end punctuation in green Put a yellow dot where a new paragraph begins
