1 INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY: “assure” getting 21st century KINDERGARTENERs READY FOR THE FUTURE
MEDT Andrée Dávila

2 Introduction (READ ME FIRST):
This material may be viewed as stand alone slides or as a slideshow. You may wish to play it both ways, stopping to review the links as needed. The ASSURE instructional design model of technology integration can be adapted for younger or older students. It is appropriate for direct instruction or constructivist strategies. Standards from AASL, CCGPS, and ISTE(NETS) are the three main resources for all the content of this learning module. Please fill out the evaluation at the end, including any questions or comments for me. This will allow me to update and revise this presentation if needed for future educators!

3 Learning objectives: What is the ASSURE instructional design model for technology integration? For what ages is the ASSURE model created? With whom do I consult for technology and media questions? How do standards from AASL, CCGPS, and ISTE(NETS) relate to the ASSURE model?

4 How can we “assure” this?
Technology integration has a strong foundation in the ASSURE model that follows: Analyze learners. State standards and objectives. Select strategies for instruction, technology, media and materials. Utilize technology, media and materials. Require learner participation. Evaluate and revise.

5 1. Analyze what exactly? General characteristics of student(s) - all age groups from the young learner to the young at heart Specific entry competencies (knowledge, skills & attitudes about topic) Learning style (auditory, visual, experiential or kinesthetic) This first step of the six steps in ASSURE will allow teachers to focus on any special needs as well (ESOL, disabled and gifted learners).

6 2. Stating standards and objectives
Curriculum standards from CCGPS (Common Core Georgia Performance Standards) Technology standards from NETS* (National Educational Technology Standards) Learning objectives should state target behavior, conditions required for performance, and degree to which the new knowledge or skill must be mastered. *(NETS for students, teachers & administration was created by ISTE- International Society for Technology in Education)

7 Standards have improved…
American Association of School Librarians (Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning) Georgia Performance Standards United States Department of Education (No Child Left Behind) American Association of School Librarians (AASL Standards for the 21st-Century Learner) Common Core Georgia Performance Standards International Society for Technology in Education ISTE- NETS for Students, Teachers, and Administrators (National Educational Technology Standards) Old School New School

8 3. Select based on analysis…
Instructional strategies, technology, media and materials should align with findings from learner analysis. Learner expectations are also kept in mind when selecting the proper tools for instruction. OK, a review….1. Analyze 2. State 3. Select

9 4. Utilize in five!!! The “5 Ps” will help students
achieve learning objectives. Preview technology, media and materials Prepare technology, media and materials Prepare environment Prepare the learners Provide the learning experience

10 5. Require active practice!!!
Promote mental engagement through high- order questioning and feedback. Include hands-on problem solving individual or group projects or competitions. Practice and apply new knowledge or skills. Receive feedback to guide learning before formal assessment.

11 6. Evaluate & revise (to be wise)
Evaluate lesson with regard to student achievement of the learning objectives. The lesson should then be revised, depending on results from the evaluation. The evaluation and revision process is repeated each time the lesson is implemented. That was six steps, easy enough to remember.

12 Even god rested on the 7th day!
So, you can rest ASSUREd Analyze State Select Utilize Require Evaluate that technology integration is systematically designed within instruction!

13 Hungry for feedback??? Q: I have taught this lesson for years. Can I just skip to step 4, since planning time is limited? A: No, in ASSURE, URE(you’re) as important as the first 3 steps, which coincidentally are ASS! (I just had to throw that one in!) Q: How will I know which instructional media & technology applications to use for lessons? A: Consult with your School Library Media Specialist or Technology Specialist to see what is available and on target for specific learning objectives.

14 Ready? Set. Go! The next three slides provide example lessons from AASL which include their standards as well as Common Core. I have included some technology ideas that correspond with NETS for students. Open the links and print off the lessons for your reference.

15 Example A: nets-Students (communication and collaboration)
During a community helpers lesson, the teacher could create some e-pals within the community (doctor, firefighter, etc.) Depending on skill level, each member of the class could participate in a message to the community helper: Gifted learner- writing or typing dictation Average learner- dictating message Exceptional learner- adding graphics AASL Community Helper lesson: Kindergarten

16 Example B: nets-Students (RESEARCH AND INFORMATION FLUENCY)
During a research study on animals, the students could view a wiki created for the unit. Depending on skill level, each member of the class could participate in follow-up activities: Gifted learner- writing facts learned Average learner- dictating facts learned Exceptional learner- illustrating facts learned AASL Animal Research lesson: Kindergarten

17 Example c: nets-Students (creativity and innovation)
During a unit on understanding authors & illustrators, the teacher could provide a digital story-making program, allowing the students to create their own printable books. Depending on skill level, each member of the class could participate in this lesson: Gifted learner- writing or typing story Average learner- dictating text for story Exceptional learner- adding graphics AASL Author & Illustrator lesson: Kindergarten

18 STANDARDS FOR REFERENCE:
AASL Standards guidelines CCGPS Standards core/Pages/default.aspxes ISTE NETS Standards

19 Evaluation of module: Name three things that you learned about instructional technology in this presentation. Were the objectives clearly stated and met? How could the presentation be improved? Other comments... Please with comments and answers to these questions. Thanks! Attached is a printable bookmark for your effort today!

20 ASSURE Analyze learners. State standards and objectives.
Select strategies, technology, media and materials. Utilize technology, media and materials. Require learner participation. Evaluate and revise.
