Choose one word to describe what this woman’s emotional state seems to be at the time the photograph was taken. Who do you think might have taken this photograph, when and why?

5 Causes of The Great Depression:
The stock market crash On October 29th, 1929 alone, stocks fell 14 billion dollars. In other words, 14 billion dollars essentially vanished from the economy. YIKES! This led some banks and people who invested their money into the market to lose everything.

7 Cause #2 Weak Banking Structure
Banks were mostly unregulated (without laws to keep them in check) Unregulated Banking institutions lent huge amounts of money for stock purchases. Savings LOST!! GONE!! VANISHED!!

OVERPRODUCTION.. oops supply was outpacing demand In 1929, the wealthiest 1 percent earned as much as the bottom 42 percent. Tax policies heavily favored the wealthiest Americans Fun Fact: 2012: Top 1% earn 19.3% of household income

17 Effects of the Great Depression:
25% unemployment! (up from 3% in early 1929) 9,000 banks closed Government started taking a more active role in the economy 250,000 children (mostly teens) riding the rails!

20 Great Depression Photo Analysis:
In your notes, you will analyze three photographs of your choosing. What is happening in this picture? If there are people in the photo: How are they dressed? What can you infer from the expression on their faces and their posture? If there are no people in the photo: Describe the condition of any man-made objects and/or environmental characteristics? What problems or frustrations are suggested by this image? In your opinion, what should be the appropriate response to the problem?

21 Pamphlet Project: You will create a pamphlet the covers the Great Depression and the New Deal (the government’s response to the Great Depression) It will include: Causes of the Great Depression Effects of the Great Depression (What was life like?) Information about the New Deal: What was it? What did it aim to change? Is this the right response? Why or why not? Lastly Present Day Picture Hand drawn or taken #myamerica
