4. 10 Statistics You Didn’t Know about Veteran Homelessness:
Declining Homelessness- There has been a 33% decline since 2010.
Gender Veterans- Homelessness is faced by returning vets, but 8% are females.
Minorities- 40% are African American or Hispanic.
Age- 50% of homeless vets range between 18-50
Service- 1/3 of vets were stationed in a war zone, 2/3 of vets served in country for at least 3yrs.
Risk- Poverty, lack of support from groups or networks
Compensation- Vets learned their skill in the military that is not applicable for occupations in civilian life.
Likelihood- Returning vets are twice as likely to become chronically homeless as other Americans. Women vets are four times to become homeless as males.
Disabilities- More than 50% of homeless vets suffer from disabilities, 2/3 is substance abuse.
Duration- Veteran homeless affects vets for nearly 6yrs on average, compared to 4yrs on average among non-veterans.
