Essential Elements of Multicultural Fiction Shows the characters as unique individuals, portrays them in an authentic manner by the use of legitimate dialogue. Culture is portrayed accurately and multi-dimensionally, including setting. Describes social issues accurately. Plot includes details of an insider perspective of the culture as a way of adding to the novel’s authenticity and accuracy.

Distinguishing Characteristics of Multicultural Fiction The characters within this genre are normally members of a specific minority group and often have strong personalities that deal with some sort of internal conflict. Brings about new perspectives for various cultures and their everyday lives; cultures that are not normally examined Describes and highlights social issues that are at stake within these communities

Is the information about the culture presented accurately and authentically, including specific details? Does the author avoid clichés and stereotypes? Does the author exhibit a certain degree of respect for the culture being portrayed? Are the characters described based on their unique individuality? Is there an appropriate amount of detail provided from an insider’s point of view?

8 Multicultural Fiction in the Classroom
Compile a list of readings for your students that examines various cultures and human experiences. Each culture has something different that they bring to the table! Multicultural fiction provides teachers with the opportunity to connect literature to multiple other subjects. Geography Social Studies Writing Writing Assignment—Students may write their own short stories of multicultural fiction, but in order to do so, they must: Research the culture extensively-use outside resources and the community Ensure information and dialogue used are authentic and accurate Include specific details of the culture throughout the story Avoid clichés and stereotypes
