2 BY 1300, MANY EUROPEAN TOWNS WERE GROWING INTO CITIES
Paris grew to a population of 300,000 Largest city in the world

3 CAUSES OF TOWN GROWTH Trade grew so that market towns became larger
Traders gathered at convenient places for travelers such as river crossings & highways Manors were overcrowded

4 EFFECTS OF TOWN GROWTH Lords allowed peasants to buy their freedom to move to towns A new middle class grew, made up of merchants & trader Cathedral schools attracted scholars & became centers of learning Diseases (bubonic plague) spread quickly in towns

5 BUBONIC PLAGUE Black Plague or Black Death
Killed 1/3 of Europe’s population ( ) Transmitted from by fleas from infected rats Causes spots of blood which turned black under the skin Left a shortage of workers

6 GUILDS Union of tradesmen that maintained work standards & set prices
Apprentice-Journeyman-Guildsman Eventually led in struggle for independence & help govern towns
