5 ABSYSMAL EMPERORS Rome had periods of great Emperors and corrupt, depraved, and even insane ones. 1) Caligula - famous for his insanity, named his horse as Consul of Rome 2) Nero – Burned Rome to the ground. 3) Commodus – Tried to fight as a Gladiator!

6

7 Commodus (Com-a-dus) liked to play make believe.
He dressed up as Hercules He liked to pretend he was a gladiator and “fight” in public He announces he is the new Romulus (do you remember who he was?) Rome was now called Commodianae (Co-Mod-dee-anna) And lastly, all the months and one day a week were renamed after him.

9 LIST OF STRANGE THINGS CALIGULA DID
1. Wasted huge sums of money indulging his bizarre tastes and sense of humor. 2. Had hundreds of boats tied together to make a temporary floating bridge so he could ride his horse across the Bay of Naples. 3. The Emperor was once overheard at a banquet telling his horse, whom he invited to the feast, that he would make him a consul 4. He declared that he had defeated the god Neptune and ordered Roman soldiers to march up and down the beach collecting sea shells as spoils of war. WAIT…..THERE’S MORE

17 QUESTIONS?! DON’T FREAK! JUST ASK!

18 QUICK REVIEW Rome grew very large (from Britain to Mesopotamia). With a large empire the need for troops was great. Rome hired soldiers that lived on the frontier. This cost a lot of money Sending troops overseas meant that fewer farmers were in Italy. Less manpower was around Rome itself. People grew hungry, taxes grew high. Disease was a price paid for Empire. In 165 A.D. Roman troops returned to Rome with a plague believed to have killed 10% of the population. Diocletian realized that the Roman Empire had grown too large, so he split the empire into the eastern and western sections. Two emperors would rule (one in the west and one in the east). Each had the same name and the same amount of power.
