3 Fundamental Counting Principle
Two events. If one event can occur m ways and another event can occur in n ways, then the number of ways both events occur is m*n. Three or more events. The fundamental counting principle can be extended to 3 or more events. For m, n, and p, then events can occur m*n*p.

4 Example: At a restaurant, you have a choice of 8 different entrées, 2 different salads, 12 different drinks, and 6 different desserts. How many different dinners consisting of 1 salad, 1 entrée, 1 drink and 1 dessert can you choose.

5 Example: In a high school, there are 273 freshman, 291 sophomores, 252 juniors, and 237 seniors. In how many different ways can a committee of 1 freshman, 1 sophomore, 1 junior, and 1 senior be chosen.

6 Example: How many different 7 digit phone numbers are possible if the first digit cannot be 0 or 1.

7 Example: A multiple choice test has 10 question with 4 answer choices for each question. In how many different ways could you complete the test?

8 Permutations Permutations: the arrangement of objects in a particular order “order matters” The fundamental counting principle is used to determine the number of permutations (the number of arrangements of n objects)

9 Example: You have homework assignments from 5 different classes to complete this weekend. In how many different ways can you complete the assignments. In how many different ways can you choose 2 of the assignment to complete first and last?

10 Example: There are 8 movies you would like to see currently showing in theaters. In how many different ways can you see all 8 of the movies? In how many ways can you choose a movie to see this Saturday and one to see this Sunday?

11 Permutations of n Objects Taken r at a Time
The number of permutations of r objects taken from a group of n distinct objects is denoted by nPr and is given by:

12 Example: There are 12 books on the summer reading list. You want to read some or all of them. In how many orders can you read (a) 4 of the books or (b) all 12 of the books.

13 Example: There are 9 players on a baseball team. (a) In how many ways can you choose the bating order for all 9 of the players? (b) In how many ways can you choose a pitcher, catcher, and shortstop from the 9 players.

14 Permutations with Reptition
The number of distinguishable permutations of n objects where one object is repeated q1 times, another is repeated q2 times, and so on is:

15 Example: Find the number of distinguishable permutations of the letters in (a) SUMMER and (b) WATERFALL

16 Example: You dog has 8 puppies, 3 male and 5 female. One possible birth order is MMMFFFFF. How many different birth orders are possible?
