We are going to be discussing when the fur trade was no longer a big business. People were starting to settle in Alberta and the government was concerned that the American government would take over.

The Hudson’s Bay Company owned much of the land. Canada ended up buying this land from the Hudson’s Bay Company because they wanted settlers to move west.
Why else would the Hudson’s Bay Company want to sell their land to Canada?
Fur trading business was dying!
How would the end of the fur trade effect the First Nations and Metis?
Ask students what we mean by British roots?
Beaver hats were out of fashion and silk hats were in. The Hudson’s Bay did not need this land for fur trading anymore.

7. British roots in Alberta
Until 1867 Canada was a group of British colonies. This means that they were still loyal and followed the British government.
In 1867 some of these colonies got together and and created the country Canada.
The Canadian Government was established in Ottawa and was similar to how the British government was run.
Our government system today is still similar to the British.
