2 Simile A simile is a comparison that uses like or as. It points out how two unlike things have something in common. Example: The clouds were like cotton candy stuck on the sky. His beard was as white as the snow.

3 Metaphor A metaphor is a comparison that says one thing is another unlike thing. It suggests how things are alike. Example: The black rolling clouds are elephants going down to the sea for water.

4 Personification Personification is the giving of human qualities to an object, an animal, or an idea. Examples: Money talks. The wind moaned and screeched.

5 Alliteration Alliteration is the repetition of consonant sounds.
Example: Pretty as a picture. Usually the sounds that are repeated come at the beginning of the words.

6 Onomatopoeia Onomatopoeia is the use of words that imitate sounds.
Examples: boom, hiss, crunch

7 Hyperbole Hyperbole is exaggeration that puts an image into a reader’s mind. Usually it is funny. Example: I’ve eaten so much I could burst.

8 Symbolism Symbolism is when an object represents an idea or concept. Example: The American flag symbolizes freedom.
