1 Subjects & Predicates

2 Every complete sentence contains two parts: a subject and a predicate.
The subject is what (or whom) the sentence is about, while the predicate tells something about the subject, like what it is doing or its state of being.

3 Judy and her dog run on the beach every morning.

First find the verb and then make a question by placing “who?” or “what?” before it. Who runs? The answer = the subject: Judy and her dog.

5 Let’s try one: We spilled popcorn on the floor.
What is the verb of this sentence? We spilled popcorn on the floor.

6 Now find the subject: We spilled popcorn on the floor.
Who or what spilled popcorn? We spilled popcorn on the floor. We is the subject.

12 Using Subjects and Predicates Express Complete Thoughts
A sentence is a group of words with a subject and a predicate that expresses a complete thought and can stand by itself and still make sense.

13 Incomplete Thoughts… An incomplete thought is missing either a subject or a predicate. Incomplete Thought: My sister’s cat. (Subject only) Incomplete Thought: Fell out of a tree in our backyard. (Predicate Only)

14 Complete Thoughts… A complete thought has both a subject and a predicate. Complete Thought: My sister’s cat fell out of a tree in our backyard.

15 Simple Subject and Simple Predicate
Every subject is built around one noun or pronoun (or more). When all other words are removed the simple subject is left.

16 Simple Subject A piece of chocolate candy would taste great.
First find the verb…

17 Simple Subject A piece of chocolate candy would taste great.
In this case, it is a verb phrase made up of a helping verb and a linking verb. Then find the complete subject…

18 Simple Subject A piece of chocolate candy would taste great.
What one noun is the simple subject? (Be careful! This one is tricky!)

19 Simple Subject A piece of chocolate candy would taste great.
The main word in the subject is the noun “piece,” with the other words of the subject – “a” and “of chocolate candy” – tell about the noun, but “piece” is the simple subject.

22 Simple Predicate The simple predicate is the verb or verbs that links up with the subject.

“would taste great” is the complete predicate. The simple predicate is the verb phrase “would taste”.
