Breakdown of population surveyed 18 of the 20 providers of secondary education in the city took part in the survey Survey is a snapshot undertaken every two years Total of 4,365 pupils in Year 8 (ages 12-13) and Year 10 (ages 14-15) completed questionnaires anonymously 2075 (48%) males, 2290 (52%) females 85% described themselves as White British (compared to 89% in 2016) 83% described themselves as Straight/Heterosexual, 7% as Bisexual, 2% as Gay/Lesbian.

Survey covers a range of areas including: School Internet Safety Emotional Wellbeing / Mental Health Physical Activity Eating Alcohol / Drugs & Tobacco Sexual Health

2016 Question 10% 7% Of pupils responded that they are fairly sure or certain they or their friends carry weapons or other things for protection when they go out 29% 26% Of pupils responded that there has been shouting and arguing at home at least once or twice in the last month that frightened them 12% Of pupils responded that there has been violence ( e.g. hitting, punching, slapping) at home at least once or twice in the last month 40% 38% Of pupils responded that they have experienced at least one of the controlling behaviours listed in a relationship with a current of previous boyfriend / girlfriend 17% 15% Of pupils responded that a boyfriend / girlfriend has used hurtful or threatening language toward them (in the past or currently) 54% 52% Of pupils rated their safety when going out after dark as good or very good Nearly one third of pupils report behaviour at home which frightens them including violence Around 40% of young people report controlling behaviours in relationships Increasing reported behaviour linked to weapons, fear at home and hurtful language

2016 Question 56% 73% Of pupils responded that they always do what they have been told to stay safe online 87% 83% Of pupils responded that they spent time using the internet for socialising after school on the day before the survey 37% 41% % Of pupils responded that they have experienced people saying or writing unpleasant things about them online 21% 24% Of pupils responded that they have posted or sent something on-line that they now wish they had not Big drop reported in YP doing what they have been told to stay safe Increasing time spent socialising on internet Reduced unpleasant experiences but still around 40% Reduced regret on posts but still around 20%

Secondary School Health-Related Behaviour Survey 2018 – Alcohol/Drugs/Tobacco 2018 2016 Question 21% 16% Of pupils responded that they have had an alcoholic drink in the last 7 days 9% 5% Of pupils responded that they got drunk on at least one day in the last 7 days 37% 29% Of pupils responded that they are fairly sure or certain that they know someone personally who uses drugs listed in the questionnaire Of pupils responded that they have been offered cannabis 4% Of pupils responded that they usually smoke at least one cigarette a week 35% Of pupils responded that at least one person smokes on most days indoors in their home The data suggests an increase in levels of drinking alcohol and having access to cannabis More YP are reporting that they know people who use drugs Smoking levels remain consistent – note reported use at home though by other

2016 Question 19% 23% Of pupils responded that they think none of the contraceptive methods listed are reliable at stopping STIs 75% 72% Of pupils responded that they think condoms are reliable at preventing pregnancy 60% 57% Of pupils that responded that they think the pill is reliable at preventing pregnancy 74% Of pupils responded that they think condoms will be reliable at preventing STIs YP report reliability which is much lower than is the fact

2016 Question 65% 69% Of pupils responded that they exercised enough to breathe harder and faster on at least 3 days in the week before the survey 9% 6% Of pupils responded that they did not exercise to breathe harder and faster at all in the week before the survey 66% Of pupils that responded that they enjoy physical activities quite a lot or a lot 8% Of pupils responded that don’t enjoy physical activities at all 24% 21% Of pupils responded that they think they are unfit or very unfit Around 2/3 of YP exercise enough and enjoy physical activity Nearly 10% do not exercise or enjoy physical activity

2016 Question 14% 10% Had nothing at all for breakfast on the day of the survey 13% 9% Of pupils reporting they only had a drink for breakfast on the day of the survey 34% 38% Of pupils responded that they had cereal for breakfast on the day of the survey 11% Of pupils responded that they did not have any lunch on the day before the survey 19% 16% Said they had a least five portions of fruit and vegetable to eat on the day before the survey Of pupils responded they did not eat any portions of fruit or vegetables on the day before the survey 13% report having no breakfast and 13% also report having no lunch 1 in 5 report achieving the 5 a day
