By Planaria J. Price and Euphronia Awakiuni Written in 2009 Published by University of Michigan As a table- go through “101 characteristics of Americans/American Cultures” and write in your notes characteristics that you agree that are a part of the US Culture. (7 min) Please do not write on copy! Share out with class (3 min)

13 What is American culture?
E Pluribus Unum “From Many to One” Sound familiar? Diversity is what makes American what it is… and at the same time, creates the challenges it faces… Like? Indiginous Americans are Native Americans… who were named “Indians” by Christopher Columbus and others because they thought they discovered a Western Route to India.

14 What is American culture
What is American culture? Sea to shining sea: Geographical Culture: Let’s fill it in! East South Midwest Great Latkes and Great Plains West

15 American Culture: Traditions and Customs of the United States
13 minutes Silently and independently read and interact with the text using the handout on Page What changed, challenged or confirmed your previous thinking?

16 American culture Melting Pot Salad Bowl
Theory that requires immigrants to assimilate (resemble) in order to become one common culture- “American” Immigrant groups blend into the culture adding items to the culture, but not keeping strong ties to their culture and background People from all over the world visit and live and share thoughts and ideas to create one big new culture. EX: While the US boasts the inclusion of over 200 languages, there is only one official language (English) Theory that calls for use to celebrate our diversity along with our oneness Immigrants keep their own basic beliefs and ways of life while adapting to the general characteristics of the culture integration of the many different cultures EX: US recognizes many different holidays from different cultures (Hanukkah, Christmas, Dia De Los Muertes, Ramadan, etc.)

17 American culture Both models of multicultural societies have contradictory aspects: - in a melting pot there is no cultural diversity and sometimes differences are not respected; - in a salad bowl cultures do not mix at all. For example, in multicultural cities, some people spend their entire lives living and working without ever learning the country’s language. So which model is better? The ideal situation would be a society where all citizens have equal rights and opportunities, but can also maintain their own individuality. It is not easy to put this ideal into practice, but multiracial society is now a reality and we must learn to live together in the best possible way.

18 Table talk You need to come up with 2 CONCRETE EXAMPLES to help support your answer! 3 min
