1 Goal: To understand transport through a membrane.
Sit down facing the screen Take out Guided Notes Take out pen or pencil

2 Transport across the Membrane

3 Examples: Diffusion & Facilitative Diffusion
Passive Transport Examples: Diffusion & Facilitative Diffusion Movement of substances from an area of higher concentrations to an area of lesser concentrations. NO ENERGY is needed!!! Created by S. DaSilva

4 Passive Transport Created by S. DaSilva

5 Movement of water from an area of high concentrations to an area
Passive Transport Example: Osmosis Movement of water from an area of high concentrations to an area of lesser concentrations. NO ENERGY! Created by S. DaSilva

6 Active Transport Movement of substances from an area of lesser concentrations to an area of greater concentrations. Requires ENERGY!

7 2 more Examples of Active Transport Process in which the cell
Exocytosis Process in which the cell expels large particles (waste matter) out of the cell. Exo = exit Endocytosis Process in which the cell engulfs large particles (food) into the cell.

8 Endocytosis & Exocytosis

9 Homeostasis The cell membrane, using passive and active transport, determines what gets into or out of the cell. The selective flow of material helps the cell to maintain constant internal conditions: called Homeostasis.

10 Solution a solution is a homogeneous mixture composed of two parts.
a common example is a solid, such as salt or sugar, dissolved in water. Solvent- the part that does the dissolving, usually larger. solute- the part that dissolves, usually smaller.

11 Cells in 3 Types of Solutions
When talking about types of solution, always think about the solution outside the cell. Ask the question does the solution have an equal, more or less solute outside the cell than inside. Iso-Hypo-Hyper????? Then figure out if the there is more or less water outside the cell than inside. Osmosis - water moves from greater to lesser Isotonic(equal) Hypotonic(less) Hypertonic(more)

12 Isotonic Isotonic literally translates to equal tension.
Solute concentration of solution outside the cell is equal to that inside the cell. Iso-Hypo-Hyper????? 3. Water concentration is equal inside & outside the cell 4. No net water movement

13 Hypertonic Solution 40% salt
Solute concentration of solution is higher outside the cell than inside. 2. Hyper = more (think hyperactive). 3. Less water outside the cell than inside. 4. Water moves out of cell into solution・ Cell shrinks 60% water 10% salt 90% water 90% water

14 Hypotonic 1. Hypo = less Think HIPPO = cell gets large
Solute concentration of solution is lower than the solute inside the cell. More water outside the cell. 4. Water moves into cell from solution. 5. Cell expands (and may burst) 10% salt 90% water 40% salt 60% water

15 Below: All cells are composed of 50% NaCl & 50%Water
30 __%NaCL __%Water 50 __%NaCl __%Water ___% NaCl ___%Water 70 70 50 30

17 Iso, Hypo or Hypertonic Iso, Hypo or Hypertonic
Is there more/less solute outside the cell than inside? 2. The solution is ________tonic Is there more/less water outside the cell than inside? 4. Will the water move in or out of the cell? LESS HYPO MORE 10% water IN 90% water

18 Iso, Hypo or Hypertonic Is there more/less/equal solute outside the cell than inside? The solution is _____ tonic. Is there more/less/same water outside the cell than inside? 8. Will the water move in, out or both of the cell? EQUAL ISO SAME BOTH BACK & FORTH

19 Iso, Hypo or Hypertonic 40% water
Is there more/less solute outside the cell than inside? The solution is _____ tonic. 11. Is there more/less water outside the cell than inside? 12. Will the water move in or out of the cell? MORE HYPER 10% SALT LESS 90% water 60% SALT OUT 40% water

20 Iso, Hypo or Hypertonic 80 20% salt __% water
Is there more/less solute outside the cell than inside? 14. The solution is _____ tonic Is there more/less water, outside the cell than inside? 16. Will the water move in or out of the cell? MORE HYPER LESS OUT 50% salt ___% water 50

21 Iso, Hypo or Hypertonic Is there more/less solute outside the cell than inside? The solution is _____ tonic 19. Is there more or less water, outside the cell? 20. Will the water move in or out of the cell? LESS HYPO 90% NaCl MORE 10% water 10% NaCl 90% water IN

22 Iso, Hypo or Hypertonic *The produce are misted with a 100% water solution. *Produce consists of 10% salt and 90% water. Is there more/less solute outside the produce than inside? The solution is _____ tonic. 23. Is there more/less water outside 24. Will the water move in or out of the produce? LESS HYPO MORE IN

23 Iso, Hypo or Hypertonic 30% NaCl 70% Water HYPER 10% NaCl OUT
The Angelfish is in 30% salt water solution. The Angelfish is 10% Salt. There is less water outside the fish than inside. 25. The solution is ___________tonic 26. Will the water move in or out of the Angelfish? 30% NaCl 70% Water HYPER 10% NaCl 90% Water OUT

24 Iso, Hypo or Hypertonic more hyper less out
Some foods that we eat are nonsoluble(non dissolvable) These foods stay in our large intestine. Is there more/less solute outside the intestinal cells than inside? The solution is _____ tonic. 23. Is there more/less water outside the intestinal cells than inside? Will the water move in or out of the intestinal cell? more hyper less out

25 The End!!!! Congratulations
