4 The Single Transferable Vote
The Single Transferable Voting system is used for elections to Scottish local councils. There are smaller constituencies (called ‘wards’ in Scottish local councils). Instead of placing ‘X’ next to the candidate of choice, voters can rank candidates 1,2,3,4 etc.

6 Parties also can stand more than one candidate if they wish.
Overall, STV tends to provide a more proportional result. Unlike FPTP, voters don’t have to put ‘all their eggs in one basket’. They may like more than one candidate and can reflect how they vote. Parties also can stand more than one candidate if they wish. Depending on the voting population of the ward, voters will have a number of representatives.
