1 GRIF : an EGEE site in Paris Region
Michel Jouvin LAL, Orsay Grid Administration Training LAL, Orsay, September 2008, 15-19

2 Agenda Goals Resources Organization Status Conclusions
19/05/201915/9/2008 GRIF, an EGEE site in Paris Region

3 Goals… Context : EGEE/OSG/NDG grids are the only computing resource for grid experiments T0 : CERN (15% of total resources) T1 : long term archival of data, reconstruction 35% of total resources T2 : simulation + analysis 50% of total resources GRIF set up as a EGEE distributed site by 6 HEP laboratories in Paris region in 2005 Open to all 4 LHC experiments 80% of french scientists involved in LHC in Paris region All 6 labs too small to build a significant T2 2 labs (LAL+IRFU) already had a grid experience since 2001 Build a large technical team from people in each lab 19/05/201915/9/2008 GRIF, an EGEE site in Paris Region

4 … Goals Support non HEP use of grids and provide resources to other communities Long tradition of resources for biomed and esr at LAL and IRFU Initially 20% of GRIF resources for non LHC communities, now much more Patrnetship l’Institut des Systèmes Complexes Multi-disciplinary research about complexity Large image processing, modelisation x2 initial goal in term of CPU resources 19/05/201915/9/2008 GRIF, an EGEE site in Paris Region

5 Resources… More CPU and storage than initially planned, even though initial objective was ambitious… Planned 2008 : 3000 kSI2K, 700 TB disk Today : 5000 kSI2K, 500 TB disk 1 CE and 1 SE operated by each GRIF site Every CE has an equal access to all SEs (all considered close) 1 internal private network for GRIF, based on 10 Gb/s links 1 10 Gb/s external link to CCIN2P3 (Lyon) for data transfers Demonstrated 250 MB/s sustained for 1 SE General purpose services for EGEE VOMS server : VO membership management WMS : job submission MyProxy : proxy renewal server 19/05/201915/9/2008 GRIF, an EGEE site in Paris Region

6 … Resources 1 public UI : grid11.lal.in2p3.fr
Usable by everyone with a grid certificate (and member of an authorized VO, ask if this is not the case) Give access to the whole grid VO dedicated to local users for people not member of other VOs Only GRIF resources are accessible to these VOs Best effort and opportunistic access to GRIF resources for many VOs 25+ VOs already supported Ready to open resources to other ones, on demand 19/05/201915/9/2008 GRIF, an EGEE site in Paris Region

7 Organization Goal : 1 unique grid site and not an administrative group of sites Scientific committee : strategy and funding 1 representative per GRIF site Chairman : J.P. Meyer (IRFU) Technical committee : one of GRIF main asset 20 people representing 10 FTE, from all sites Every day exchanges, monthly F2F meeting Responsible : M. Jouvin 1 unique management tool for the whole site to maintain consistency and share management load 1 configuration database for the whole GRIF Ability to administer GRIF from any site 19/05/201915/9/2008 GRIF, an EGEE site in Paris Region

8 Usage Growth 19/05/201915/9/2008 GRIF, an EGEE site in Paris Region

9 GRIF Contribution per VO
ISC was not yet using GRIF… 19/05/201915/9/2008 GRIF, an EGEE site in Paris Region

10 GRIF Contribution (Atlas)
French contribution to Atlas : ~25% GRIF in Atlas top-10 in Europe in March/April 19/05/201915/9/2008 GRIF, an EGEE site in Paris Region

11 GRIF Contribution (LHCb)
French contribution to LHCb = ~15% 19/05/201915/9/2008 GRIF, an EGEE site in Paris Region

12 GRIF Contribution (Biomed)
French contribution to Biomed : ~25% 19/05/201915/9/2008 GRIF, an EGEE site in Paris Region

13 Related Projects University Paris 11 campus grid : cross-fertilization between different communities Production : physics, biology, computer sciences Grid infrastructures : GRIF (LAL, IPNO), XtremWeb Computer sciences Data-mining, statistical auto-learning Peer to peer computing, desktop grid EDGES (FP7) : interaction and interoperability between production grids and desktop grids LAL et LRI involved from Université Paris 11 CARRIOCAS : R&D on distribued file systems (LUSTRE) on a high speed network (40 Gb/s) Partnership with CEA/DIF (CCRT) and EDF R&D Pole de compétitivité 19/05/201915/9/2008 GRIF, an EGEE site in Paris Region

14 Conclusions GRIF is one of the main EGEE resources
Major contribution to LHC experiment Significant contribution to other smaller communities and open to support new ones Communities who participate to funding have a guaranteed access GRIF demonstrated feasibility of a distributed site build by sharing infrastructures and manpower Greater global expertise GRIF is involved in grid usage dissemination A multi-disciplinary grid is working and is the only path for the future 19/05/201915/9/2008 GRIF, an EGEE site in Paris Region
