3. U.S. Enters World War II
December 7th, Japan leads the attack on Pearl Harbor
United States stopped sending oil reserves to Japan and remained neutral prior to the attack
Resulted in the U.S. declaring war on Japan, soon after Germany declared war on the U.S.
*Allies Powers- Britain, France, United States, Russia
*Axis Powers- Germany, Italy, Japan

December 1944
December 1944, Adolph Hitler attempts to split the Allied armies in northwest Europe by a surprise blitzkrieg thrust through the Ardennes to Antwerp
Caught off-guard, American units fight a desperate battle to stem the German advance at Bastogne
Allied line took on the appearance of a large bulge.
The Third Army is moved to Bastogne proves vital to the Allied defense, leading to the neutralization of the German counteroffensive despite heavy casualties.
A crucial shortage of fuel and the gallantry of American troops proved fatal to Hitler’s ambition to snatch victory or a draw with the Allies in the west.

7. WORLD WAR II THE WAR IN THE PACIFIC
The Tide Turns Against Japan
May
The Battle of the Coral Sea.
The first naval battle in history where the two opposing forces never saw each other.
All the fighting was done by carrier based aircraft.
The battle was roughly a draw
Japanese decided to abandon their immediate plans to set up bases in New Guinea for the invasion of Australia.
It was a shift in momentum the Allies needed.

8. WORLD WAR II THE WAR IN THE PACIFIC
Battle of Midway
June 4-June 7, 1942
The most important battle in the Pacific.
The Japanese attempt to draw out and destroy the U.S. Pacific Fleet by attacking Midway Island.
The Americans destroy all four of the Japanese heavy aircraft carriers and shot down 253 planes.
The Japanese navy never recovered from these losses or regained the offensive initiative again. For the rest of the war in the Pacific, the Americans would have the upper hand.

9. WORLD WAR II THE WAR IN THE PACIFIC
Battle of Iwo Jima
February 19, 1945
American Marines land on the volcanic island of Iwo Jima.
strategically important as an air base for fighter escorts supporting long-range bombing missions against mainland Japan
The island is only 660 miles from Tokyo and has airplane landing strips the Japanese are using. The American goal is to seize the landing strips for themselves.

Each student will be responsible for analyzing the document or audio clip and demonstrating how if helps us to understand WWII.
