1 Fixtures, Jigs, and Check Gauges

2 Jigs and fixtures Jigs and fixtures are production tools used to precisely manufacture interchangeable parts. They are designed specifically so that large numbers of components can be machined or assembled identically to enhance their accuracy and reduce overall manufacturing time and costs, by minimizing the possibility of human error within the production process. A fixture is a tool used for locating a piece of work and clamping it to support and hold any individual parts together as one unit. They are generally heavy in construction, and must be clamped securely into place on any particular machine, such as milling machines or shapers. A jig is a type of fixture that positively guides and supports the tool for a specific operation, such as drilling or boring. Jigs are typically lighter in construction than fixtures, but each is similarly customized for any particular application.
