Pollution By: Tom and Emily Gorham

2 What is pollution? CFC’s Global warming Acid rain Smoking Littering

3 Pollution It is the undesirable state of the natural environment being contaminated by harmful substances The harmful substances is known as pollutant

4 Can you name any pollutants?
Cfc’s Garbage Facieses waste Co2 Water droplets No2 Organic waste (Plants, humans, and Marine life)

5 Point source pollution
Pollution originated from a single point Like Pipes Ditches Wells Boats Containers

6 Non point source pollution
Pollution that can not be tied to a single source Like Nitrate pollution (farming)

7 Air pollution Presence of any noxious gas into the air
Can come form natural sources Volcanoes Can you think of any noxious gases that we put in the air? CO2 CO Methane Cows

8 Cool Facts about air pollution
It would take 20 of today's new cars to generate the same amount of air pollution as one mid-1960s model car In the 1950s, smog levels in Southern California were worse than they are today in Mexico City, where current US standards for smog are violated every day of the year. California officials identify agriculture, including cows, as the major source of nitrate pollution in more than 100,000 square miles of polluted groundwater.

9 When sulfur dioxide mixes with water
Acid Rain When sulfur dioxide mixes with water Changes the pH of water Makes the water acidic which means its corrosive

10 Cool facts about Acid Rain
Acid "rain" isn't just rain; acid snow, acid fog or mist, acid gas, and acid dust all have the same effect as acid rain. Lakes and streams are normally acidic, but acid rain can make them so acidic that it damages animal and plant life Stone buildings and monuments are targets of damage from acid rain.

11 Thermal pollution Thermal pollution is when you heat a body of water
Factories Fish Thermal shock

12 Water pollution Any presences of a harmful material in a body of water
Can you think of any? Bacteria Ecoli Garbage Oil spills

13 Cool facts about water pollution
Failing septic systems pollute. Untreated wastewater from failing septic systems can contaminate nearby streams, drinking water sources, and bays. Soap from washing your car at home pollutes. Soap and dirt from washing your car can flow through our storm drains and ditches and end up in our streams untreated. Pet waste pollutes our water. Pet waste contributed to the pollution that closed some shellfish beds in ocean counties.
