Figure 1 Psychotropic drug-induced weight changes showing expected relative (weight burden scale) and absolute (weight change/year) weight alterations.10-12,15,16,19,24,31,36,37,43-97 Psychotropic drug-induced weight changes showing expected relative (weight burden scale) and absolute (weight change/year) weight alterations. The weight burden scale sequentially shows drugs likely associated with weight loss (-0.5), weight neutral (0), slight weight gain (+0.5), moderate weight gain (+1.0), moderately severe weight gain (+1.5) and severe weight gain (+2.0). SSRI = selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor; TCA = tricyclic antidepressant; MAOI = monoamine oxidase inhibitor; SNRI = serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. Figure 2 STAR*D used randomization to compare various switching strategies commonly used by clinicians in either primary or specialty care practices to treat self-declared patients with nonpsychotic major depressive disorder. As in clinical practice, patients may select among strategies. After selecting among the strategies they find acceptable, patients were randomized to specific treatments. Discussed in the text and shown in Figure 1 are tendencies for the various treatments to induce or be associated with weight changes. Reprinted with permission from Rush AJ, Trivedi M, Fava M.
