1 Probability

2 Tomorrow will be Friday
Probability is a measure of how probable it is that an event will occur. There will be a snow day tomorrow You will have homework tonight Pizza will be served for lunch today The sky will darken tonight Tomorrow will be Friday P = 0 = 0% P = 0.25 = 25% P = 0.5 = 50% P = 0.75 = 75% P = 1 = 100% It is not very likely it’ll happen. It might happen There is a strong chance it’ll happen It’ll definitely happen!!! It’ll NEVER happen!!!

3 Probability the measure of the likelihood that an event will occur.
Probability is reflected as a number between 0 and 1 A probability of 0 indicates impossibility A probability of 1 indicates certainty The higher the probability of an event, the more certain that the event will occur

4 Theoretical Probability Experimental Probability
What should happen Experimental Probability What does happen in an experimental or testing situation

5 Probability Number of outcomes you want P (event) =
Total number of possible outcomes

6 Theoretical Probability
Heads or Tails What is the theoretical probability that when you flip a coin it will land on heads? P (event) = Number of outcomes that you want Total number of possible outcomes Heads Heads or Tails 1 2 =

7 Theoretical Probability
What is the theoretical probability that when you roll a die it will be a one? Theoretical Probability What should happen P (event) = Number of outcomes that you want Total number of possible outcomes 1 1,2,3,4,5,6 1 6 =

8 Theoretical Probability
What is the theoretical probability that when you roll a die it will be even? Theoretical Probability What should happen P (event) = Number of outcomes that you want Total number of possible outcomes 2,4,6 1,2,3,4,5,6 3 6 = 1 2 =

9 Theoretical Probability
What is the probability that you spin a red? Theoretical Probability What should happen P (event) = Number of outcomes that you want Total number of possible outcomes 5 12

10 Theoretical Probability
What is the probability that you spin a yellow? Theoretical Probability What should happen P (event) = Number of outcomes that you want Total number of possible outcomes 1 12

11 Theoretical Probability
What is the probability that you spin a green? Theoretical Probability What should happen P (event) = Number of outcomes that you want Total number of possible outcomes 3 12 1 4 =

12 Theoretical Probability
What is the probability that you draw a 7? Theoretical Probability What should happen P (event) = Number of outcomes that you want Total number of possible outcomes 4 52 1 13 =

13 Theoretical Probability
What is the probability that you draw a red card? Theoretical Probability What should happen P (event) = Number of outcomes that you want Total number of possible outcomes 26 52 1 2 =

14 Theoretical Probability
What is the probability that you draw a face card? Theoretical Probability What should happen P (event) = Number of outcomes that you want Total number of possible outcomes 12 52 3 13 =
