1 Dynamic Coverage Control for Authorized STAs in Home/Apt. Environment
March 2003 Dynamic Coverage Control for Authorized STAs in Home/Apt. Environment Tae-Jin Lee*, Kyunghun Jang** *SungKyunKwan University **Samsung Electronics March 2003 Tae-Jin Lee, SungKyunKwan University Tae-Jin Lee, SungKyunKwan University

2 What are Problems ? Densely populated WLANs APs in near-proximity
Mutual interference between them APs in near-proximity Rogue APs E.g., Home, Apartment Interfering each other Unauthorized access May hear other APs’ unnecessary transmission Unnecessary power consumption of APs APs transmit with fixed power all the time Tae-Jin Lee, SungKyunKwan University

3 Fixed TX Power & Coverage

4 Adaptive TX Power & Coverage

5 Dynamic Coverage Control (DCC)
March 2003 Dynamic Coverage Control (DCC) To provide WLAN with effective “cell engineering” To tackle rogue APs and/or near-proximity APs To provide physical access to authorized STAs only To maintain optimal coverage area for authorized STAs To save unnecessary TX power of APs Tae-Jin Lee, SungKyunKwan University Tae-Jin Lee, SungKyunKwan University

6 March 2003 DCC Procedures An AP Requests authorized STAs to report their link margins using Measurement Request Frame Requested STAs report the AP with the link margins using Measurement Report Frame After collecting link margins from the authorized STAs, the AP adjusts TX power in order to optimally cover the authorized STAs The STAs may feedback to the AP whether the adjusted and received power is appropriate or not If it is not appropriate, the AP may increase the TX power When a new STA joins the BSS, or an existing STA leaves the BSS, the above procedure repeats Tae-Jin Lee, SungKyunKwan University Tae-Jin Lee, SungKyunKwan University

7 March 2003 DCC Procedures (cont.) The AP maintains timers to monitor which stations are not active during a certain period of time If a STA is not active, the AP re-adjusts the TX power with the STA excluded The AP may wait to request the link margins to newly added STAs until the “minimum measurement request time” interval is reached To minimize the frequent measurement request overhead Tae-Jin Lee, SungKyunKwan University Tae-Jin Lee, SungKyunKwan University
