The Appearance of True Discipleship

On Trial as a Disciple Persecutions of the early church – 111 AD Roman Governor Pliny to Emperor Trajan: 1. Distinction on the age of a Christian? 2. Will denying Christ merit pardon? 3. Is the name “Christian” alone enough? Roman policy – a Christian ought to be visible 1. Should any distinction be made by the age of the Christian? Should the very young be treated differently from mature people? 2. Does denying being a Christian mean the accused is pardoned? 3. Is the “name” of Christianity itself enough to condemn the accused or is it the crimes associated with being a Christian?

Visible Discipleship "all men will know that you are My disciples….” John 13:35 Jesus said people can see discipleship What does discipleship look like?

"You are the light of the world
"You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven“ Matthew 5:14-16

But it should be seen by the world
Visible Discipleship It is not a physical appearance….. But it should be seen by the world

Visible Discipleship "By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” John 13:35 Acts 2:46-47 – People appreciated their love Acts 2:46 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved. Outsiders can see when we love other Christians

Visible Discipleship "By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” John 13:35 Acts 2:46-47 – People appreciated their love 2 Corinthians 8:20-21 – Honorable among men 2Co 8:20 avoiding this: that anyone should blame us in this lavish gift which is administered by us-- 21 providing honorable things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.

Visible Discipleship "By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” John 13:35 Acts 2:46-47 – People appreciated their love 2 Corinthians 8:20-21 – Honorable care Hebrews 10:20-25 – Seen gathering together Heb 10:19 ¶ Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and having a High Priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

Visible Discipleship "But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.” 1 John 2:5 2 Corinthians 9:13 – Glorify God for obedience 2Co 9:13 Because of the proof given by this ministry, they will glorify God for your obedience to your confession of the gospel of Christ and for the liberality of your contribution to them and to all,

Visible Discipleship "But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.” 1 John 2:5 2 Corinthians 9:13 – Glorify God for obedience 1 Peter 2:12 – Glorify God for patience 1Pe 2:12 having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation.

Visible Discipleship Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15 1 Peter 3:15 – Ready with an answer 1Pe 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;

Visible Discipleship Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15 1 Peter 3:15 – Ready with an answer Ephesians 4:29 – Ready with words of grace Eph 4:29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.

Visible Discipleship Serving brethren Taking care of brethren Gathering with brethren Obedient to our promises to God Obedient to the commandments of God Being ready to answer questions on Christ Being ready to offer words of Grace Eph 4:4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

On Trial as a Disciple If you were charged with being a Christian: Would there be enough evidence to convict? Would your friends and neighbors testify: To your love of other Christians? To your obedience to the Word of God? To you love of the Word of God 1. Should any distinction be made by the age of the Christian? Should the very young be treated differently from mature people? 2. Does denying being a Christian mean the accused is pardoned? 3. Is the “name” of Christianity itself enough to condemn the accused or is it the crimes associated with being a Christian?

Becoming a Disciple "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.“ Matthew 28:19-20
