1 Warm-Up 1. What causes substances to change states of matter? 2. What kind of state change occurs when a liquid turns into a solid? 3. What is the state change that causes a liquid to turn into a gas? 4.What happens to the movement of molecules as a gas changes into a liquid? Explain.

2 Transition Now that you have seen changes in the states of matter, lets try to solve a real world problem a lot of people have… On a hot summer day, do you like cold drinks?

3 Group Design Project Day 1
Group Design Project Day 1 *Download the “Group Cup Design Project” from Rappscience* Goal: You and your group will construct a cup that keeps ice cubes from becoming liquid water Step 1: Research Find more information on how states of matter change What type of state change is occurring when ice becomes liquid? What materials are good/bad for keeping things cold?

4 Group Design Project Day 1
Step 2- Cup Design Brainstorm Design a cup that will prevent ice cubes from becoming liquid Brainstorm and create a design/blueprint, label it How will you test your cup? HW: Research, Brainstorm, Get materials for cup design * Bring enough supplies to try your cup out first*

5 Warm-Up and Describe what is happening to thermal energy and intermolecular forces as ice becomes liquid. What materials did you get for your cup design? Why do you think these materials will make the best cup?

6 Group Design Project Day 2
Step 3- Test Materials You will get the opportunity to test your materials Make modifications to your design based on test results Explain modifications- what did you change? Why did you change it? Step 4- Construct Final Cup Design After testing materials, build and decorate your cup! Take picture of final design and label all parts Describe the materials you used in the final design

7 Warm-Up and How do atoms behave in a solid, like ice? How do atoms behave in a liquid, like water? What type of energy is added to ice to make it turn into a liquid? What happens to the temperature WHILE ice is actually melting into liquid?

8 Is Your Cup Ready? *5 minutes*
Make sure your cup is put together the way you want it. Fill your cup with 200 mL of water Everyone will get 2 ice cubes from me

9 Group Design Project Day 3 Competition Time!
Step 5- Test cup designs Record the following: Picture of the final cup design Record the time it took for ALL ice to melt Observations Step 6- Conclusion What type of state change were we trying to prevent? Explain. What group had the best cup design to keep the ice from melting the longest? What materials did they use? Step 7- Reflection What was easy/hard about this design project? Are there any modifications or additions you would like to make to your cup based on what you have learned? What other questions could you ask about state changes that could lead to further testing? **Done? Submit packet to JupiterGrades through Google Drive**

10 Group Design Project Day 3
Create a commercial for your cup design! Today…. make your script Videographer Films the project and submits to Edmodo Public Relations (PR) Why is your cup the best? Convince me to buy your cup Expert Describe the science behind how your cup works. What does your cup help with? Designer/Engineer Describe how it is built and materials involved. Friday…. we will finish filming and submit to Edmodo

11 Warm-Up 10-21-16 Describe the process of evaporation.
Describe how condensation works. If I have a bucket of ONLY ICE, and I add heat energy, what happens to the temperature? If I have a bucket of ICE WATER (ice has started to melt), and I continue to add heat energy, what happens to the temperature?

12 Finish FilmiNG your Commercial! *15 minutes*
Videographer Films the project and submits to Edmodo Public Relations (PR) Why is your cup the best? Entice me to buy your cup Expert Describe the science behind how your cup works What does your cup help with? (hint: what was the point of this project?) Designer/Engineer Describe how it is built Materials involved Done? Submit to Edmodo HW: Watch 1 other video, comment

13 Kahoot! Let’s review Unit 2 so far Go to Kahoot.it
