It is bordered by to Saudi Arabia to the south. It is a peninsula (a piece of land sticking out into the sea). The sea surrounding Qatar is the Arabian (or Persian) Gulf.

Physical Geography
9
Qatar Qatar is quite a small country. It has an area of 10,360 km².
Ireland has a land area of 64,421km² so it is about 6 times as large. Most of the country is a low flat plain covered with sand. Qatar has areas of oil deposits on land and gas fields offshore (in the sea).

People
12
Qatar The capital of Qatar is Doha. Over 90% of people living in Qatar live there. Qatar has many foreign workers – only around 12% of people living in Qatar are Qatari nationals. The other people living in Qatar come from countries like India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Philippines, Egypt, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. These people are called ‘guest workers’.
13
Qatar A lot of people can speak English for business purposes but the official language of the country is Arabic. Qatar was a British Protectorate from until 1971 when they gained their independence. The majority religion in Qatar is Muslin (68%). Christianity and Hindu are the largest minority religions. قطر (Qatar in Arabic)
14
Qatar Qatar is a very rich country. Most of the money comes from selling petroleum (petrol) – a product of oil. 14% (almost 1 in 7) of Qataris are millionaires if you convert their wealth to dollars. The currency in Qatari is the Qatari Riyal which is divided into 100 fils.

Flora and Fauna
20
Qatar There are 21 species of mammal in Qatar.
The national animal is the Arabian Onyx. This is a medium sized antelope with long straight horns. Some people think that the myth of the unicorn originated from oryxes that had lost one horn.
21
Qatar The largest mammal in Qatar is the dugong.
The name ‘dugong’ originally comes from the Malay language and means ‘lady of the sea’. Other local names also include sea cow, sea pig and sea camel. Other animals include…
22
Sand Cats
23
Honey Badgers
24
Golden Jackals
25
Desert Long Eared Bats
26
Qatar There are also 211 species of bird in Qatar.
The national bird is the falcon. FUN FACT! Qatar has the highest density of camels in the Middle East!
27
Environmental Issues
28
Qatar Qatar has one of the world’s lowest levels of rainfall – only about 8cm per year. Most of their water comes from desalinated water (i.e. water from the sea which has the salt removed). 99% of drinkable water comes from this source.
29
Qatar Qatar’s water consumption is one of the highest in the world.
An average Qatari uses an average of 1200 litres per day while an expat (a person living in the country who is originally from a different country) uses only about 150 litres.
30
Qatar If there was an emergency, Qatar’s water supply would last just 2 days. Producing desalinated water can be very bad for the environment as the remaining hot salty water will kill anything in the area of water into which it is released.

Development
33
Qatar The Gross National Income (Purchasing Power Parity) (GNI PPP) is a scale that tries to compare how rich countries are in comparison to each other. In 2013 (the latest data available), Qatar was ranked 1st with a GNI per capita of $138,480. Ireland was 13th with a GNI per capita of $54,610.
34
Qatar The Human Development Index (HDI) is a scale that looks at how long people live, their education levels and the amount of money people have to see how well developed a country is. In 2015 (the latest data available), Qatar was ranked 33rd out of 188 countries. Ireland was 8th.
35
Qatar The Happy Planet Index (HPI) is a measurement of how well countries are performing in creating long, happy and sustainable lives for the people living there. It looks at how long people will live, how happy they feel they are and the country's ecological footprint.
36
Qatar An ecological footprint is a measurement of how much of the Earth's resources a country is using. A score of 1.8 means that the country is using all the available resources as quickly as they are produced. A score above 1.8 means that the country is using resources more quickly than they are made.
37
Qatar In 2012, (the latest report that has information for Qatar and Ireland), Qatar was ranked 149th. Ireland was ranked 73rd. The individual scores were... Qatar Ireland Life expectancy 78.4 years 80.6 years Wellbeing 6.6 (out of 10) 7.3 (out of 10) Ecological footprint 11.68 6.22
38
Human Rights
39
Qatar Qatar was the first Arab country in the Persian Gulf to allow women the right to vote which happened during the first ever elections in Qatar in 1999. However, only 0.1% of the members of parliament are female. Women are generally not brought to social events unless they are family events. Schools for girls are separate from schools from boys.
40
Qatar The death penalty is legal in Qatar, primarily for spying and other threats against national security. The death penalty can also be used on people who leave their religion but this has never actually happened. It is an offence to drink alcohol in public in Qatar and Muslims caught doing so may be flogged.
41
Qatar It is illegal for a man and woman to live together unless they are married. LGBT people face fines and up to 7 years in prison. If they are Muslim, they face the death penalty for being homosexual. In September 2013, it was announced that all the Gulf states agreed a proposal to establish some form of testing to ban gay foreigners from entering any of the countries.
42
Qatar Freedom of expression is very limited in Qatar.
The poet Mohammed al-Ajami was sentenced to life imprisonment for writing a poem criticising the ruling system in This was later reduced to 15 years imprisonment. Amnesty International considered Mohammed al-Ajami a prisoner of conscience i.e. imprisoned solely for peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression.
43
Qatar They campaigned for his release and happily he was released in March However, a new cyber law from September 2014 allows up to 3 years in jail for posting content online the ‘may harm the country’. The law says that each judge can decide whether the content is damaging or not.
44
If you were in charge in Qatar and could change just one thing, which area would you change first?
