Addiction Recovery Center

2. How did this come about?
UCW was approached by Bay State Community Services, former tenant of the Barbara Moore House.
State is looking to expand recovery centers in Massachusetts.
Members of Prudential and Outreach Committees met with Daurice Cox, Psy.D, C.A.S., President and CEO of Bay State Community Services.

3. What is a Recovery Center?
Centers provide community-based recovery oriented sanctuary for those in recovery and for those searching for recovery.
The lives of everyone affiliated with the centers have been touched in some way by substance use.  
Support includes peer support, spirituality, self-help and most importantly a community of love, understanding and encouragement.
All are welcome who seek a safe and supportive environment and offer access to community connections, educational resources, sober activities and much more.
A peer model that connects individuals in recovery and ensures that their community makes their own decisions in providing support, resources and encouragement for all paths of recovery.
Programs may include: Yoga, job counseling, music, meditation, bible study, gardening, Veterans Support, Learn to Cope.

4. How are lives impacted? Words from a Quincy Center Member:
“I come to the Recovery Center most days to utilize the great resources available. I did not have access to a computer or phone unless I came here. This gave me the ability to keep in touch with my friends and family. I was able to apply for jobs and got advice from the staff, who assisted me in securing a job, which greatly improved my mental, physical and spiritual well being. I have been coming here for about two months and feel very welcome and look forward to seeing the staff, as I consider them my friends.”

5. Are there other Recovery Centers?
Currently, in Massachusetts, there are 10 sites funded by the Department of Public Health and the state is looking to add 5 more in under-served communities.
Bay State Community Services is applying for a state grant to fund a potential Walpole Center following successful model in Quincy. (see handout)
UCW will receive fair market rent.

7. How will this be different than previous tenant?
Program provides support rather than counseling for addictive behavior.
There are no clinical or residential services.
Services will include support for individuals, groups and families.
There will be opportunities for UCW and Walpole to be involved.
Center will operate approximately 50 hrs per week and include Saturdays.
Center would be funded by the state, therefore under supervision of Department of Public Health – Bureau of Substance Abuse Services

8. How is this model received?
This model is supported by the Governor and the state.
Walpole police would welcome this model of recovery support in our community.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of MA announced in January that they are giving $1 million to help grow and expand recovery coach services at drug rehabilitation facilities across the state, including the Quincy Center.

9. What is the timeline? Grant to be submitted by 2/12/19.
Ongoing congregational and community conversations.
Decision expected by 3/19/19.
Operations live within 90 days of approval.

10. Let’s talk …..
Flow of clients may be different (groups vs individuals).
Limited parking.
We expect open dialogue with center as we learn to welcome and support our new neighbors.
We will be meeting with Sunshine to discuss potential changes.
Recovery center staff is trained to address security issues. All voluntary, no one can be asked to stay, people can be asked to leave.
