1 Mrs. McMorrow Month of: January 2019
January flew by with lots of fun learning and New Year’s Goals! We finished a fun snow globe writing piece with a craft to assist! We also began using Seesaw in the classroom. Look for upcoming posts! We began January by diving back into multiplication and division. Students will continue to learn fluency strategies to help them become more efficient in solving their math facts. Currently, we are studying data tables, bar graphs, and line plots! These are great for word problem practice! We have started a new unit focusing on character traits, feelings, and motivations. We will search for these elements in the series, Sarah, Plain and Tall. Students will study how a character changes throughout novels in a series. We have also started learning about open syllables in unit 6. When a vowel ends a syllable, it will be long like in “flu” or “re-sponse”. In Science, we have almost finished building simple machines with our lego kits. Then, we are diving into severe weather storms! Students will complete a short research project on a storm of their choice. In Social Studies, we have continued our unit focusing on the history of Massachusetts. We will start by studying maps of Massachusetts and of New England. We will soon explore the Revolutionary War and Boston Tea Party! Valentine’s Day is coming up! Please keep our Wellness Policy in mind while planning your Valentines. No food or candy is allowed to be handed out. Thank you! This month, we have focused on the craft of creating suspense in story writing. Students learn how to use the Magic of 3 by using word referents, red flag words, and story questions.
