4 Who were the Puritans? English Protestants, 16th and 17th centuries
Disapproved of Church of England; wanted to purify it - thought it was extravagant and sinful Wanted religious freedom from persecution went to the Netherlands eventually settled in America Massachusetts Bay Plymouth (Pilgrims)

Belief in modesty, hard work, and religious devotion Puritan Ethic - good works are accomplished through hard work, self-reliance, and self-discipline influenced American culture of industriousness and efficiency

Puritan Plain Style - characterized by short words, direct statements, and references to everyday objects and experiences Remember the 3 S’s: Simple Straightforward Spiritual Purpose of literature: spiritual insight and instruction Types of literature: Narrative accounts: biographies, autobiographies, histories Poetry, journals, diaries for self-examination Sermons, religious doctrine/essays NO drama or fiction = sinful
