Denton Cooley was born August 22,1920. He has been one of the biggest names in cardiovascular surgery and the Texas medical community. Having received undergraduate and medical degrees from both the University of Texas and the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Cooley returned to his native Lone Star State after a share with the Army Medical Corps that began in Cooley’s research while a student at Johns Hopkins was closely aligned with studies into the “Blue Baby” procedure. During his time in Baltimore, Cooley worked to perfect these early procedures designed to correct congenital heart defects in newly born children.

8. What my reaction to what I was learning
My reaction was fascination. When I watched the actual surgery videos, I didn’t get grossed out and if I were to get grossed out then I wouldn’t know what a heart looks like and if I couldn’t handle it then I might as well find another career. Ever since watching those two surgery videos it made me excited to think that that’s what I’m going to be when I’m older.
